The Prop Firm Account Lifecycle: From Challenge to Scaling
A prop firm account goes through distinct phases, each with different rules, pressures, and strategies. Understanding the full lifecycle helps you plan for the long game.
Phase 1: The Challenge (Evaluation)
Goal: Prove you can trade profitably within risk limits.
Typical rules:
- Hit 8-10% profit target
- Stay within 5% daily loss limit
- Stay within 10-12% total drawdown
- Trade minimum 5-10 days
- Complete within 30-45 days
Strategy: Trade conservatively. Risk 0.5-1% per trade. You don't need to be aggressive — consistency wins.
Phase 2: Verification
Goal: Confirm Phase 1 wasn't luck.
- Lower profit target (usually 4-5%)
- Same or tighter risk limits
- Often longer time allowance (60 days)
Strategy: Even more conservative than Phase 1. You've already proven profitability — now prove consistency.
Phase 3: Funded Account
Goal: Trade real capital and generate profits.
This is where things change:
- Trailing drawdown may now be calculated differently
- Profit splits typically 70-90% to the trader
- Scaling opportunities become available
- Payout schedules vary (bi-weekly, monthly)
Strategy: Treat this as a long-term business. Size down initially, prove consistency, then gradually increase.
Phase 4: First Payout
The milestone every trader works toward. Key considerations:
- Most firms require 10-14 days before first payout
- Minimum payout amounts vary ($50-$500)
- Processing time: 1-5 business days
- Tax implications begin at first payout
Phase 5: Scaling
Many firms offer scaling programs:
- Increase account balance by 25-100%
- Improve profit split (80% → 90%)
- Lower the profit target requirements
- Add more simultaneous accounts
Scaling criteria typically include:
- Consistent profitability over 3-6 months
- No rule violations
- Meeting a cumulative profit threshold
